bio

Hyperbella is an intergalactic neo-soul band that formed in 2017. Initially conceived by Cassidy Hilgers, the project involved Carly Bates (keys), Brenden McBride (bass) and Austrud Aurelia (drums) at its inception. This collaborative songwriting collective produced an eight-song self-titled album in May 2019.

In 2019, drummer Jeremy Reynoso joined Hyperbella as Astrud Aurelia pursued an artistic career in Brooklyn, NY.

Drawing from influences such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Esperanza Spalding, Dirty Projectors, David Bowie, and Radiohead, Hyperbella fuses complex harmonies with polyrhythmic textures and alternative jazz improvisation. They seek to capture relatable images and experiences within their lyrics and blend equal parts etherial sounds with intense build-ups and breakdowns.

Based in Phoenix, Arizona, Hyperbella has had the pleasure of sharing stages with bands such as The Urban Renewal Project (LA), Novala (LA), Jay Som (Oakland), Crumb (NY) as well as bands local to Phoenix as House of Stairs, The Maya Spectra, Harrison Fjord, The Stakes, Palo Brea, Alassane, and Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra.

Hyperbella has been together for less than a year, but they’ve already managed to create an impressive sound that is both cathartic and danceable. Their soulful melodies are tied together by tight funk grooves, transcendent solos and powerfully enchanting harmonies. Any fan of Hiatus Kaiyote will quickly find a new local favorite in Hyperbella.

- JAVA Magazine, April 7, 2018

They're releasing a self-titled album they say is "a collection of songs that we've created throughout our first two years together," adding "We wrote in a way that was really new for all of us and found a songwriting process in which we drew from the styles of many of our influences, like Hiatus Kaiyote, Esperanza Spalding, Lianne La Havas, Dirty Projectors, David Bowie, and Radiohead."They were drawn to odd meters and polyrhythms, thick vocal harmonies and expansive breakdowns on an album they feel is a "celebration of our work and an unveiling of our style."
